Steps to Report a Bias Incident or Hate Crime
If you are a victim of or witness to a hate crime, follow these reporting steps:
1. Call 911 / File a Police Report
Call 911 immediately if an emergency is occurring. For non-emergencies, report the incident to NOPD so officers can respond and generate a police report.
2. Seek Medical Care & Document Injuries
Seek immediate medical evaluation for any physical injuries. Keep all medical records, discharge papers, and bills associated with the incident.
3. Preserve Evidence & Photograph Vandalism
Save all text messages, emails, social media posts, or voicemails. Allow police officers to photograph physical injuries, slurs, graffiti, or property damage before cleaning or repairing.
