Juvenile Diversion

Eligible youth may receive supervised community-based services, counseling, and restorative opportunities to address behavior prior to a formal delinquency adjudication.

Child Protection & Dependency

The dependency division represents the interests of children affected by severe abuse, neglect, or lack of parental supervision in Child in Need of Care (CINC) proceedings.

The Juvenile Court Process

A plain-language overview of how cases move through Orleans Parish Juvenile Court:

1. Referral and Screening

Law enforcement refers youth incidents to the District Attorney’s Office for legal review, charge evaluation, and screening.

2. Court Filing or Diversion Decision

Prosecutors decide whether to file a formal petition in Juvenile Court, refer the youth to pre-trial diversion, or decline charges.

3. Hearings and Adjudication

Court proceedings occur, including arraignment, status conferences, and an adjudication hearing (trial) where evidence and testimony are presented.

4. Disposition and Services

If a youth is adjudicated delinquent, the judge orders a disposition, which may include probation, community service, counseling, or detention.

Note on Case Outcomes: Specific outcomes depend on the facts of each case. Serious or violent offenses may result in secure detention or other court-ordered consequences under Louisiana law.
